A few years ago, when I purchased my '85 XJ700X from a family friend, I purchased the pod type K&N air filters, and had my carbs re-jetted to fit the extra air. I just recently heard that putting the pod air filters on my bike is a "very bad idea" and I was just wondering what your guys thoughts were on the filters. In the three years that I've had it, and the two and half I've had the pod filters on her, I've never had a problem with it, so I was just wondering what everyone thought about it.

    Thanks

    Cam

You are lucky, the person your family friend must have known what he was doing.

There is nothing wrong with them if you can get the bike to function for your needs.

I know some members have been successful at going to pods.

If it's running good, don't mess with it.

The only question is, did you ride it with stock intake/exhaust tuned well before the pods were installed?
Almost everyone reports drastic power band differences whether it be reduced low end power or no top end.
Basically, does it lift the front wheel when you put it in second and get on it and still easily break 100mph in 1/4 mile?
Does it feel like a rocket lit up under you when you hit 6500 rpm (the addictive zone)?

BUT, that doesn't matter AT ALL as long as YOU are happy with how it runs and it puts a smile on your face!

    Enjoy and be safe.

I'll have to try that 2nd gear test and let you know :))
But I didn't ride it enough before I put the pods on, but when the dealer that put 'em Dyno'd her, there was an increase in about 10-12HP, which I can definitely feel, and hear. But this guy I was talking to was saying that the pods are bad for my bike in the long run.

But yes... She puts a smile on my face :))

I'd love to see the dyno print out of it to compare.
It should be making close to 100 hp then...cool

The magic word is dyno'd. Most guys don't have access to, or know how too, use one. If the bike was dyno'd, I assume it was properly jetted and the correct heat ranges on the plugs. It probably runs better than most of those "they say:" guys would know what to do with. Keep the oil breather clean, and the gas and oil fresh and it should last as long as anyone's bike ridden the same way you ride.

The only "Downside" I've ever heard of with pods is if you get caught in a really heavy down pour. Other than that, like the other guys have said, if they were set up proper and dyno'd the only problem you may incur is this one:
