I am going on a big trip in August. I just bought a 82' xj750. my plan is to check the clutch plates. cables. many shaft flushes. compression test. valve check. carb syc and clean new jets. spark plugs. spark plug wires. wheel bearings, steering bearings. suspension oil change and seals.new tires. fabricate pannier racks and rear rack. paint rust with truck bed liner. brake fluid change and hose inspection. lube swingarm bearings. replace stator. spenser seat mod if uncomfortable. spedometer cable. k&n filter. missing anything??
****my questions are. are the rear shocks rebuildable (if so is there a link?), any common failures? or engine mods that are important? Couldnt find any, this bike seems bullet proof. The bike already has 40k on it, how long are these engines typically good for assuming ^^^ I do the above work when it needs to be done**** thanks

If you are doing a lot of miles get a screen of some kind and highway bars. May not look cool, but believe me, if you are thinking of putting up to ten hours a day in the saddle, you'll need to move your legs around a bit. The screen will take a lot of wind pressure off your upper body, thus making it less fatiguing. Also get a good kidney belt, your back will thank you. Throttle lock or one of those palm doo-dads, your wrist will appreciate that. If you want to go one step further, fill your bars with lead shot, it'll dampen the vibration.
That's about all I can think of, it's not all mechanical preparedness on long hauls!
Just re-read your post, unless you are doing jetting, the K&N filter may lean out your motor.

thanks man. any threads on here with tips on making highway pegs on the crash bars?? I have a throttle master or whatever they are called, they are great. I aint worried about lean, I need to run er' lean for when I am 15k feet in the andes. At what altitude will the plugs foul and the bike stop working with stock jetting? thanks man

Search the web for bead riders. They are a mat of interwoven beads that you strap to your seat. They will significantly reduce the pressure points on your butt. You need to be a little careful as they also cause your backside to run cooler. Great if you are riding in a hot climate. During a cool trip over the Andes in August? Not so much.

Have a great time and be ever so careful!

thanks I am going to pass on the windshield for this trip. there will be lots of slow rutted dirt road riding where it will be in the way. I am only going to be speeding down the interstate in America most of the other countries I am in have a 55mph max. Anyone know how long the stator lasts with 3k oil changes?
