Hi there, I am new and am proud to announce that I am an owner of a black 1982 XJ650 Maxim. This is my first bike and I picked it up yesterday.

    For a brief history

As far back as I know this bike spent 9 years untouched in a barn sometime ago then came into my uncles ex-girlfriend's, ex-boyfriends hands. I am the 9th owner but half the previous owners were all members of the last mentioned fellows family. It got some use for awhile and was then traded to a small time car dealer for a car. It sat there for 2 years unmoved and outside but covered with a tarp. This January my uncle picked it up from the dealer for $800. When he got it the wheels wouldn't even turn, and despite all else he got it started without too much difficulty. It needed new brakes, new front tire, new kill switch, new battery, new turn signals on the right side, new steering bearing, recovered seat, and a HELL of a lot of cleaning. About the turn signals, I don't think it was dropped but we found it leaning up against a wall at that fly by night car dealer.

I then bought it off my uncle for $2000. He says it cost him about $1500 after all the parts and a lot of time cleaning it up. It looks good now and when I took it in for a safety the staff were shocked that it was an '82. They figured "90-something." Keep in mind that I live in the highly corrosive environment of the Great Lakes region.

It runs ok but not perfect yet. It misfires quite a bit and even at highway cruising speed you can hear it miss lets say about twice per second. I would guess the carbs are all gummed up to hell so I'm using a heavy dose of cleaner in the gas to try and take care of that. Hopefully it runs better after a few treated tanks worth of gas. Other than that its great, rides great, handles well (not that I have a lot to compare to) and I'm quite happy with it. When I first saw it at the dealer in January I thought to myself "what kind of a piece of shit is this?" but I am very impressed with how far its come since.

I may post some pics of it once I get a chance to take some.

It warms the heart to hear of the lengths folks will go to resurect what most people would consider a lost cause. Good on ya! Now, get those carbs cleaned out, fuel additive alone probably won't do it. Pull them and find out what shape they are in. Let's hope they aren't filled with white fuzzy junk. Best of luck on that, I think you'll be glad you did.
