Well mine has sat for a couple weeks without being started, pulled and cleaned the plugs, can smell it's getting gas down to it. ( for sure ) lol.. can hear it fire off and tach rises for about 6 secs, then nada. Where do you spray the starter fluid to see if it's a fuel issue? ( Into the airbox, or drill a hole and spray across the carbs, thanks. Just wanna get it running again. lol.

Spray starter fluid into the airbox.
But if your plugs are wet you're getting fuel.

Of course if you've fouled the plugs with fuel, it won't start until you clean them.

I tried to wire brush the plugs yesterday, ( they were black when I pulled them ) again this morning, she fired up for about 3-6 secs, Headlight came on and such, nada there after. Gonna grab some starter fluid today, possibly spark plugs from auto zone.

Runs for a half dozen seconds then dies, you say? Hmmm. I wonder if you're running out of fuel or losing spark?

As Hound said, starter fluid goes in the airbox. Here's what you could do. Since it'll start on its own, you could squirt a little in the airbox after it starts as it begins to die. If the engine spins back up and you can keep it running this way, you'll know it has a fuel delivery problem. Perhaps plugged enrichment circuits.

Or, you could hook a timing light to a plug wire and start it up. You should get a flash from the bulb even as it dies out. This is a little harder to do. Move from cylinder to cylinder to make sure all are firing. If you notice that the flashing stops abruptly then the engine dies, you're losing your spark.

Sounds like a fuel restriction to me too. Try the starter fluid.

If that keeps her running, check the fuel filter, if it's good you might have to pull those carbs and do some spring cleaning.

If the starter fluid makes it stop quicker you might be running really rich, hence the black plugs. But your mixture shouldn't have changed unless you played with it. Double check that you choke cable isn't pulled too tight and is activating the choke by accident.

Either way, keep that battery voltage up while your playing with it. Starting and then running for a few seconds each time can really drain a battery quick, and then you have two problems to try to figure out.

PS I am not a bike mechanic, these are ideas that have come from my own limited experience and you should not waist too much time or money on any of them.

I was kinda thinking fuel restriction ( has inline filter ) so might be clogged too, also going to regap and replace plugs ( Just in case ) trying the starter fluid to see what's up there too. Bike was running great till i couldn't ride it due to injury, healing is progressing so wanted to get it going once more. I have the battery tender on at night usually to keep the charge up. Only thing i have adjusted was Idle ( while back ) to bring it up to where it needed to be. Other then that, nada.

Ok, got the starter fluid, replaced the plugs, tried to start without fluid... nada, Fired up as soon as I shot it. Enrichment circuits... Question, how far down do i need to tear the carbs? I don't have the means to resync them nor the funds for a tool Lol.. No issues with removing and such ( With a little direction from the forums Lol ) Just need to know if I am going to destroy the sync. took it down the block ( painfully due to injury ) and ran fine. Reset idle on it ( About 1100 now ) So got some good outta it running lol. Also, Anyone got the part number for the Air filter ( Stock ) Thanks a ton guys.

Andy, Gamuru did a how to on cleaning the enrichment circuit, it is in the FAQ suggestion forum. If that is your problem & it sound like it is, that how to will deffinetly cure your start problem.

it sounds to me like your carbs will need to be overhauled. MY XJ had the same problem, poor starting, fouled plugs and rough idle. After I pulled the carbs and cleaned them out my XJ ran great.

Depending on the weather I might be able to run out with my carb sticks, etc. and give you a hand getting your bike dialed in. PM me early Saturday morning with your local weather report and we'll take it from there.
