    I have a 1985 Maxim XJ700 air-cooled bike I've only owned for about 6 weeks now.

I did a little research on the VIN number and determined that my bike does match my DMV registration information but I haven't tried to look at the engine and see if the VIN matches it as well. The reason I bring it up is my engine is gray bare metal like most everyone's here but the cover on the top of the engine block is andonized or maybe painted fire engine RED. Again this is the part on the top of the block that is sealed with a gasket that has the YICS logo on it. Was this normal for these two parts to be different colors or is it possible there was some major work done to my engine and parts from another bike/engine was used in this work???

Just hadn't seen any pictures of others' bikes with anything like this or at least I had not noticed. I'll try to take pictures and post them.

You are talking about your valve cover. Not sure but I think it was black from the factory.

Most likely someone did a little painting when they adjusted the valves or replaced the valve cover gasket

Your engine #'s are near the end of the clutch cable.

somebody painted the valve cover when they had it off.

(Not uncommon, guilty of it myself...)
