Before anyone has a heart attack I am not trying to do anything illegal. The PO ran the VIN through NC DMV and I checked it with an online service. It comes back clean. I'm trying to save this bike from parting out.

I found this company - they register your vehicle in various states then you can title it in your state. They told me they would register my bike in Maine since Maine only requires bill of sale for older bikes. You get plates and registration/title from Maine an you can run them for a year or transfer to an NC title whenever.

You send notarized bill of sale and a power of attorney and they take care of it for you.

NC is very fussy about titles but it will be as if it was sold out of state and registered in a non title state then brought back.

Anyone have any experience? I have read several glowing reviews about ITS on vehicles in states as fussy as NC.

Souinds like a good solution to a problem that many of these XJ bikes have. Bad or no Titles. If every thing comes up clean why not. My vote is to go for it. Its better then finding a frame with a good title and transfering everything over. In my state they put the engine number on the title as well. So the frame number and engine number can be different.

Re: Any exp with International Title Service or other servic

Did it for a 77 XS750 2D I picked up without a title. Did the same search at the DMV here in TX. Then found out the owner of record was deceased.
Had a nortorized bill of sale, proof of Insurance and all of the forms requested filled out for ITS-Titles. They registered it in Maine just over a year ago. Cost was $165 which included plates. I just flipped it this year to a Texas title and plates which cost another $80. They took around 4-6 weeks IIRC.

The other option was a Bonded Title. I believe the bond stays on the title for 3-5 years. That was going to cost right at $350. The DMV sets the value and set it at $900 even though I showed where I had purchased it for $150. This in turn raised the cost for the bond.

Check with NC DMV first. They are wise to these deals. The last I checked they needed 3 years proof of owner history from a non- title state. I decided to go through the bond procedure, but that won't work on an out of state bike. NC is tough. They want it right. I'm okay with that. There are too many bikes without titles floating around. It doesn't make sense to have a bike with no title. No title, no deal.

They charge $175 Mark - I was thinking I could do it myself - they only act as your proxy in registering it in Maine.

Yamasarus - I was wondering about that too. Problem is I have heard horror stories where NC just says you need to get the original title but won't provide any information as to registered owner. Normally I wouldn't touch a no title bike myself unless I just wanted the parts, but when someone gives you one for next to nothing.....

I would be glad to do a bonded title but I have heard bad things there too. What was the history of your bike?

There are a lot of untitled bikes around - most have been abandoned in shops or owners died etc. - Like I said I just want to rescue it. Failing that I will part it out.

Bill, If you can get a title in your name, I would think you would be good to go. If this outfit gives you a Maine title then call DMV and asked what is required to process a Maine title. follow their directions and you should be good to go.

The bonding process is not too bad, but they won't do an out of state bike. You have to identify who you got the bike from and why there is no title. On these old bikes, check with DMV to establish value as that is what the bond will be issued for. Then the bike has to be inspected and a form completed. Once passed, take the whole mess to DMV and process. They have an outline on line and in house to follow. One thing to remember. The DMV will help with instructions if you asked politely. My DMV ladies are terrific!

One other thing. Most title companies will tell you up front if your state will accept their work.
