Any Maxim-X owners use the alternative airbox boots?

Any one try using the 1 1/2" black plumbing coupling for airbox to carb intake boots? Is there a trick to getting them on? Two-hours+ and I still don't even have the first one on. I cut each coupling in half and relieved (beveled) the inside edge to make it easier to get the carb mouth in. Still can't get it onto the carb.

I was really excited not to have to fight the old, hard boots, which are now broken and torn... This has been worse. Wondering if I'm just too stupid and missing some important tip or trick.

I bought new one's from Yamaha for $15 each. They are nice and soft and flexable. $60 or fight with something for 2 hours and not get any where.I have a set of pods that I will sell for $25 for this bike.

Thanks for the info. I guess I thought the boots from Yamaha would be the same as the old ones I took off, which were super hard. I'll check it out. Thanks!

hi jvswan, You dont have to go for OEM, This summer i did the carb clean and my 2 boots were out of shape hence did same research on this site and bought the QUICKPLUMB 1 1/2` i probably had to wrestle 30min or so thats all. I also did cut it exactly half for each boot. I remembr some trying with soap water or wd40 so job will be easier..Dont give up. Its easier really and its a Good Snug fit...I used the same old clamps as they are slim than the ones that come with quick plumb.

There are two ways to do it fairly easily:

    1. Take the carb rack off, push the boots DEEP in to the airbox. Put carbs back on and pull boots in to place.

    2. Squish the rubber boots, fold them in half. This will make it really easy to put them in to the airbox. After they are in, they spring back up and will go back to their shape with just a little force.

Thanks littlegiant and mestnii... Not sure why this has been so difficult. I found the American Valve 1 1/2" plumbquick at Lowes. Did as you recommended and folded them and stuffed them into the airbox. I don't have a problem getting them to the carbs. My problem is that I haven't been able to get them on the carb mouths. I've spend more than 2 hours now, and still don't even have one on there. I did lube them a bit, but still no joy. From all the descriptions I've heard, it is supposed to be fairly straight forward and it sounds easy. I was wondering if perhaps the Mikuni carbs of the Maxim-X are a different size, or something. Or, perhaps there is an obvious step/trick that I just didn't figure out.

Thanks anyway. Guess I'll drop the $40 for the OEM boots.

I went back to stock. Can't beat the oem ones. I can have a set of carbs off, cleaned and back on in an hour. (ok, I'm tooting my own horn a bit)

The OEM ones are very flexible.
Way more flexible than the plumb coupling IMO

Chacal has them just waiting to ship out to you. It will be the best $55 you'll spend.
The X carbs are much closer to the airbox than the other XJs making it a more difficult job (there's like 1/4" gap as you know)

I prefer to push them back into the airbox, lube the groove where they snap into the hole of airbox and once I get them started to seat twist them onto the carb. Make sure you have the airbox pushed all the way back.
New boots and a little practice and you'll have the carbs back on in 30 minutes.

I had put boots on same Maxim X(mikunis)..so if i can..YOU should be able to.
    1. Loosen the airbox by loosening screw on top and one on side of battery(Yu will have to remove the batt box..i guess) so it gives you lot of room to wiggle.
    2. Have the carb rack JUST inside the Intake boots(all clamps loose)as if you can pull carbs out (this will give wiggle room for up/down/sides)
    3. Lube if needed wiggle carb rack by up and down motion (as if you are pulling out )with holding boot from inside the airbox using other hand (one boot at a time). This method is what helped me achieve result.
Note. Why dont you shave the inner tip of boot by 1mm or so at a 45degree so that it can get in the mouths easier...????

Well, perhaps the issue is that my hand is so large that it is difficult for me to do much manipulation inside the airbox. Frankly, though, getting them attached to the manifolds on the other side requires so much moving up and down that I attached those first. At this point, I don't have a lot freedom to move the racks, even if I could hold the boots firmly enough to press the carbs against them and wiggle them up and down.

My OEM boots shipped from Chacal on Monday. Should have them in by Thursday or Friday. Keeping my bruised and bloody fingers crossed!
