I read this ad in a magazine for a brand of bike called UM (I think it stands for united motors). So I went to their web site. I was wondering if anyone has heard of them? I think they might be from china. The bikes in the pictures looked pretty cheap and ugly. I'm sticking with my XJ.

There's been a flood of cheap Chinese and Taiwanese bikes hitting the markets lately. I've researched into a few of them, seems that some are better than others. Most take a popular bike and copy it as close as they possibly can. Many Virago 250 and Ninja 250 clones out there. Anyway, the main drawback I see to them is if something happens, there's no support for parts that you'll need for repairs. Friend of mine's brother bought a Chinese made scooter for very cheap (had blown piston rings), and has been unable to find ANY parts for it at all.

There are a load of these things over here in Spain as well. Don't know the makes but they don't go bigger than 250cc. I met a bloke who bought one new and the gearbox collapsed after just a week. The dealer wasn't very helpful and it took 6 months and threats of court action before the bike was repaired.

Yea that crap - its not cheap enough to buy it and I actually trust mid 80's Jap over later Jap anyway. So its like they are screwed both ways IMHO. Old tech, but competing with old jap they lose on price, quality and reputation.
    Cool.
