Three weeks ago, I experienced 2 of my cylinders cut out while riding and traced it to a faulty ignition coil. The bike sat for 2 weeks before I was able to replace the stock coils with 3.0 Ohm Dyna coils. After installation, I attempted to get it to fire and was met by a no start followed by massive backfire. I have fuel, air and spark. The spark is very strong and appears white in color which differs from the orange produced by the stock coils. I'm not sure if temperature has any significant effect on starting but it was about 58 degrees Fahrenheit. Have I damaged the bike as a result of the backfire? Any insight on the cause of the backfire?

Are you sure you plug the coils correctly? I mean, one coil is supposed to fire cylinders 1 and 4 and the other one would fire 2 and 3.

Yup the coil wires are going to the right plugs.

OK, are you sure the leads from the wire harness are connected to the coils the right way ?

Yes, I marked them prior to removal of the old coils to ensure proper reassembly. Would the whitish color of the spark have any negative effects?

Did you experience only one big backfire when you aterted the bike and then immediately shut the engine off? It could have been an excess of flamable fumes or unburned fuel trapped in the exhaust from when your coil failed that got ignited. It could have completely cleared out and could be OK now.

Did you try to start it again since?

Yes, I only experienced one big exhaust backfire when I started the bike and then promptly shut the engine off. I went back out today and examined the ignition coils after your initial question. It turns out I had the harnesses installed correctly but the left and right coil wires were attached to the wrong set of plugs. The left side goes to 1 and 4, the right side goes to 2 and 3. I had the right going to 1 and 4, left going to 2 and 3. I switched them and the bike now starts up fine. I didn't realize how much of an improvement the Dyna coils were going to be over my stock ones. The performance has improved greatly. I do thank you for your assistance and timely responses.

Good for you! Yes, Dyna coils are great. I installed a set on my Maxim-X and I remember it improved starting a lot.

I should have told you first that the left side coils fires #1 and #4, but it seemed so obvious that I skipped that info. Sorry!
