I have a 1983 xj 750. When I try to start the bike it sounds like I have a weak battery then it stops turning the starter. Bought a new battery, charged it , and it did the same thing. Jump the solenoid and nothing happened but sparks. Took starter apart, cleaned it. The magnets in the starter a cracking. Tiny little pieces were in the housing. Is this normal or might be my problem and need new starter.
    Thanks Jimmy

If you have cleaned the starter & the brushes are good & it still doesn't work, a replacement might be on the cards.

    I cleaned the brushes.
The starter has been dragging some and clattering a little.
Probaly would not hurt to replace starter and solenoid.
    Thanks for the reply also.

If the magnets are cracked its definitely time to at least replace the housing and magnets. Cracked magnets give extra north and south poles and will cause high amp draw, slow starter revolution etc, etc.. I dropped my starter and cracked the magnet and experieced the same symptom. When I opened it I found the magnet cracked. Picked up a housing from a local bike wrecking yard and used my old armature and brushes as they were like new.
