I discovered this winter that the best way to ensure instant starting of my 900 on cold mornings was to give it a burst on the battery charger for an hour or so while I'm getting ready for work. When it comes to starting I just give it full choke, press the starter and vroom, start-up no problems first time, almost every time. If I don't do that, after a couple of mornings it does get a bit sluggish in the starting department. Good battery means plenty of power to produce power to turn the starter over AND produce spark.

The QUESTION is: it's a bit fiddly clamping the alligator clips; i.e. remove the side cover, sqeeze the clips onto the terminals etc., and then replace the side cover when the charging is done. Also requires removing seat to disconnect the TCI whilst charging. I'm wanting to run a wire from each terminal to possibly around somewhere under the seat so I can just simply connect the alligator clips to the wires. What guage wire should I use???

I'm currently using a 2700mA charger - the wires conected to that aren't all that thick. The charger has a 5 amp fuse. So...wires rated at between 5 and 10 amps I guess would be OK. Would that be correct??

    Buy the Pigtail and Connecter.

Or ... Grab a 2-wire Lighting Connection from a salvaged loom.

16 would work, 14 would be great, 12 is a overkill
no real need to disconnect the tci if the key is off
you only need to extend the positive, use a frame or engine bolt for negative
put a fuse close to the battery

What you need is something like this Optimiser

Seen one on my mates Triump Tiger which does not get used often. The socket end can be fixed onto the batt terminals and left there even when riding. Get home and just plug her in.

Some good info on batt maintence on this page allso.

The 14 is a good middle of the road.
Just insulate what ever you put on the positive terminal.
No need for arcing, fire hazard and loss of energy(both bad)
Just grind some metal clean for the ground where the positive will come out.
    BE SAFE
