g'day, i need some advice on charging a battery, i believe to do it properly you remove battery, remove cell caps and hook up to trickle charger. A friend of mine leaves his on the bike, caps left on and reckons if you have the breather pipe connected that will vent the build up of gases, are both ways acceptible? if not can you tell me why .thanks in advance.

A trickle charger should be fine for the weekly (I sure hope this isn't the case, your battery is in sad shape here)/monthly top up in the manner your mentioned your friend uses. This assumes less than a 2-3 amp charger is used.
It is not advisable to charge the battery with a heavy charge on the bike (4 amps and up). I would remove the battery to service it in this case.
The why is as you surmised, gas discharge while the chemical coversion process can be high enough to blow the vent line or caps off of the battery and fling acid all over your bike. The other side of this is that if you happen to have the battery explode (it does happen, but rarely), it isn't on your bike (notice the theme?).
Be careful around batteries, they are hazardous things and should be handled/treated with respect. An ounce of prevention is worth that pound of cure.
