    I suspect I wasn't searching for the right thing. That's just the info I was looking for!

    Looking at:
    HCP1917 Aftermarket complete rear wheel standard-duty BEARINGS AND SEALS KIT, for all XJ550 models. Three bearings and one seal comes with this kit. NOTE: the left side inner wheel bearing was originally a single-sealed bearing, not the double-sealed bearing as is included in this kit. It is recommended that one of the plastic seals be removed before installation (a small screwdriver can be used to gently pry it out). The sealed side of the bearing always faces "outward", away from the other inner bearing, when installed.
    $ 29.95

    Why would one ever want to remove a seal from a bearing? If it's double-sealed, it should be good to go, no further lube needed, right?

    Most sealed bearings are only minimally greased anymore. At the very least it is wise to use a grease needle to add a bit.
