92 Seca 650, 42k miles, carbs rebuilt 2 yrs ago, owned since new

For a long time, when I hit the starter button, there is a pause, and then the starter kicks in.
If the bike does not start, I have to turn key off/on before trying again.

Beginning last year, when I hit the starter button there was a grinding sound and bike did not start.

Can someone point me in the right direction to fix my bike?
    Thanks.

    There is no "Bendix."

The starter has a reduction gearset in its nose, and it is continually engaged with a "one-way" (sprag) clutch.

When the starter spins and the motor isn't, the rollers in the sprag clutch lock up on their center piece and spin the motor.

Things that will cause your symptoms:

A bad starter solenoid, not supplying proper current to spin the starter "smartly." The original solenoid was a true electro-mechanical solenoid, so this is a good possibility.

The starter itself is gummed up and can't spin fast enough to cause the sprag clutch to properly engage.

You used automotive or synthetic oil and the sprag clutch can't "catch" because the oil is literally too slippery.

Usually not. Just do a change to motorcycle specific oil, run it for a few hundred miles, and change it again. Anything that has a JASO MA rating will be fine. I used a JASO MB rated oil once, and the starter clutch started slipping; switched back to an MA rated oil, and it went away after a week.

The most current list of oils that meet the JASO MA spec.
