Anyone have experience with aftermarket windshields for an '85 Maxim 700 XJN?

I am tired of being buffeted around on the highway (I wear a full-face helmet) at 70 mph. I also love the look of my XJ with no windshield as it has beautiful paint and chrome and I don't want it to look like Ponch and John's cruiser from the '80's TV show C.H.I.P.S.

Any idea on a good windshield that could come off and on easily and direct the wind mostly over my head?

    Thanks!

There are several solutions for you:

    http://www.slipstreamer.com/

    I installed a Slipstreamer "Hellfire-2" SS24V-Round Headlamp.

Stable. Easy to install. Replaced the Thumb-type fasteners with Stainless Allens.

Hey rickcomatic, I just bpoiught an 85 xj700 and am making it safely rideable. I stumbled across this old thread because I have bought a spitfire 06 to put on my new bike and don't really like how it sits. To get the angle I want I jhave to raise the bottom edge up to sit on the back of the tach and speedo bulbs. Just the shape of those gauges keeping it from leaning back when touching the headlight. Since you are one of the guys that have been telling everyone how to fix, then fix, then fix it again, patiently for years, I thought I would ask if you had tried anything other than the hellfire and had it sit right. Thanks.

I use the Spitfire on my XJ. Mine is a bit older than yours those so the instrument panel is different. Doesn't touch the panel, and is about 1/2 in over the headlamp. Did take a bit of tweaking to get it right, and I still check it occasionally to make sure everything hasn't shifted. Another good use for my digital calipers!

Thanks, I have that she big shiny chromed plastic gauges, they look pretty but I just can't seem to get it to set right. I can hear them rubbing when its down where it should be and I am not going to try riding with it sitting over them. Or of course I could just really be screwing up the mounting too.

The spitfire looks good on lots of bikes. I put one on my '95 Magna and it looked fine too.

I had some trouble getting it just right, too.

To make the FINAL adjustment, ... I needed to loosen BOTH Handlebar Clamps AND the two Handlebar attachments of the Screen Prop Bars, while I positioned the Screen above my Headlight.

Thanks. I'll try again to get rid the .0015" difference between the night on the left and right side that I am just absolutely sure everyone else will be able to spot right away when I blow past them once y get it road ready.

I had a helper when I did mine.
Everything was "Loose" and able to be "Nudged" until we had everything just right.

I actually have it on and almost right but today I drained and refilled my oil. I have a stuck float and am waiting on a rebuild kit. And took a short ride up hwy 62 to Eureka Springs in Arkansas and every time I slowed down for a corner I could hear it rubbing a bit. I have messed with it some more a little bit ago and I will draft the wife when she gets home. Its all I can really work on until my parts get in and I just want too make every little thing perfect. 😎:)
