I need some help! I have an 83 XJ750M, and I am having problems with it running. It seems when I go to crank it, it does not seem to run properly. I have to leave the choke all the way on in order for it to run. And then it runs terribly. It over revs, but if I turn the choke down, it wants to shut off. I am stumped.

Also, I just had the carbs on the motorcycle rebuilt.

You may have paid to have the carbs rebuilt, but it's unlikely that they were rebuilt. Those symptoms do not occur with freshly rebuid carbs.

You've got blocked pilot circuits (only runs on the enrichment (choke) circuit), and vacuum leaks (over revs/ high idle).

    Read. Read again. Then do.

Also read the links in my signature. There's lots to check before you can sign her out as being a reliable and safe motorcycle.

It helps us if you make this thread THE thread about your machine; keeps us from missing things.

By stating "rebuilt" were the carbs tore down and all seals specifically shaft seals replaced? Sounds like your carbs are not fully synched ..did they do a bench synch and then a running synch. Or did they a a spray can rebuild?

Yep, when I got mine I had the carbs "rebuilt". My problems weren't quite as bad as yours, but it wasn't good. Then I took the plunge, read "The Church of Clean" and cleaned them myself. I have to admit that they were actually pretty clean, but still needed deep cleaning of the pilot system and proper syncing and adjustment. I'm pretty much convinced that on these older bikes we have to be able to do all the maintenance ourselves. It's not as hard as it sounds as long as you don't take any shortcuts and ask a lot of questions here. These guys have seen it all and know it all.
