bits of plastic in the sump

    Hi Guys,I found 1/2'' size bitsof black plastic in the oil pan,any ideas?.

    Bad news, that's your primary chain guide coming apart. Engine rebuild is the only way to get at it. Don't run your engine until it has been replaced... obvious chunks are floating around, you don't wanna damage the engine any more. Whereabouts in Canada? And what bike?

    I am in Georgetown ontario,The bike is a restoration project I got from a yard sale($300),it is now all done except for this problem, she is an 1981 xj750 seca,Thanks

    You can run the engine.

    However, if big enough hunks break off they can become lodged in the shifter forks and prevent you from shifting gears. These hunks can usually be picked out so that you can continue riding temporarily; BUT...

    Your primary chain guide IS starting to break up. The repair involves splitting the cases to replace it. You do not necessarily need to tear down the whole motor if the top end is still solid. But you will need to pull the motor and split the crankcases.

    Yes,that is exactley what was going on,The bike would not shift gears so I had a look and took the plastic out ofthe shift drum, and away we went,it's just to bad I put the motor back in the frame

    I have two shop manules and none of them show the primary chain never mind the guide!. So I will have to go in blind.

    It might be called a HY-VO chain. Clymer book page 108 has a good pic of how it sll goes together, page 100, figure 139 shows the guide. My factory manual is in the shed but I can grab it if you need.

    OK, now I have it Haynes call it a ''starter chain'' and a ''starter chain guide'',page 88 for anyone that needs it, Thanks for all the help guys.

    I will be away till next saturday, but I have a Suzuki SV650S (1999),if you feel like going for a boot, let me know,I am up for it(I can also pick your brain, I have only had the Seca for two months,)
