I dont think they are supposed to be self canceling. My 81 doesnt, you have to push in the turn signal switch to turn them off.

If you have a factory relay it should self cancel.
Once you change the stock signals you either have to use something with the same draw as stock ones or your signal realy will not make your signals blink. In case you don't mind the self canceling being gone you can always get an electronic relay for fairly cheap at autozone. That relay will make any signal lights work but it won't self cancel.

It was a third prong that hooks up to the cancelling unit already on your bike. I have a 1981 maxim an dit has it. Do you have a wiring diagram? You can clealy see in there.

It would seem there is a switch in the speedo that needs to be engaged. the speedo i have came off a 550 because it was bad when i got it. Do you think this could be the culprit? Did the 550's not have self canceling blinkers? The reason i ask is because i could never get lights on the speedo I figured it was a blown bulb. maybe it was never compatible.

All XJ-series bikes have the self-cancelling feature (although on the XJ700 models, the self-canceller unit was built into a large, integrated "relay" box rather than being a stand-alone component).

The self-canceller picks up the "distance travelled" input signal from the speedo reed switch, which is on the white wire with the green tracer stripe.

The 550 Maxim speedo and the 650 Maxim speedo units are the same, and the plug-in connector should be the same, too. The 550 Seca is a different version.

As the front wheel spins(or, just the speedo cable if you disconnect the speedo cable at the wheel), the reed switch opens and closes. If you set a multimeter between the white/green wire and the black wire of the self-canceller harness connector (main wiring harnesss side), the resistance between those two wires should alternate between zero and infinity as the speedo cable is rotated.

If not, either there is a bad connection or the reed switch is bad and must be repaired (??) or replaced........
