Finally got my son's xj550 dialed in and purring......he was riding up and down the road in front of the house and it stops like he hit the kill switch. Hits start button and nothing happens......walks it back to the driveway....I get on it and started cranks for two seconds and stops cranking.....I flip the kill switch to off and BOOM! Huge back fire out the tail pipe, bet I jumped 3ft in the air....guess I have a bad ground somewhere....before I start to tear into it again, you gentlemen have any suggestions where to start? Have pulled the seat and tank jiggle all the wires while hitting the starter and haven't located it easily

under the seat near fender is side stand safety relay pull it off and see if the bike starts if it starts you need to clean the sidestand switch.
the back fire is normal if you leave the key on to long without starting the bike the tci will fire

Not quite, the coils are fired by the TCI "switching off" ground to the coils and the primary field collapses and produces a spark. When turn the kill switch off, you are switching off 12V positive to the coils which has the same effect as the ground is "live" to the coils from the TCI when the bike is not running. Switching off the power causes the coils to fire and if there is any unburnt fuel/air in the cylinder you get a boom.

I had this happen the first time I tried to start, yup I probably jumped a mile myself. :D
