Brake Lines

    Does anyone know whether any of the XS brake lines are interchangable with an XJ650? I found some brake lines on mikes xs for a good price and was wondering if any of them would work. I want to change my front brake lines with stainless steel ones.

    I am quite confident that mikes one piece braided line (part #29-6504-$44),will suit your needs nicely.The banjo fittings are the same on the XS/XJ bikes,and the fittings on this line swivel for enhanched adjustability.Should you go this route,be advised that you will no longer need the junction on the lower triple clamp (weight savings-WOO-HOO!).
    The basic reason for the junction is so the manufacturer can use the same lower hose on many different bikes,while the top hose is more proprietary.Keep in mind that if you go with clubmans,this hose may be a bit long.Also,as a matter of course,I would recommend new crush washers
    ( part # 08-0258-$1 for a pair,and you'll need 2 pair).Good luck!

    To correct myself,I should have said that the banjo fittings are the same SIZE. The angle may be different,but I still think you'll be okay with the one-peice line.

    Mikes XS sells new parts, not used.

    Actually alot of XS stuff should fit our bikes... I have a clutch lever and top clamp from mikes XS.

    I found some nice shocks on that page. Anyone know if those will fit an 82 xj650 nicely? Is there a comprehensive list of interchangeable parts, or are we better off just posting up individual inquiries?

    Well I already have clubmans so that definitly enters into the equation. Maybe then the 29-6505? it seems to be the same only alittle shorter? I might have to give it a try when the funds come in. IF anyone has tried this please chime in.

    The #25-6505 is only the upper line...you would still need to buy the the lower line,and retain the junction on the lower triple clamp.When I put lower bars on my '82 Maxim 650,I had a custom line made by Galfer,and sold by cyclebrakes.com.The quality is awesome,it was WELL under $100,and they are great folks to deal with.

    I just had some stainless lines made to replace the stock ones... Cost was $150... 8O

    The top banjo will be the same (same on all yamaha's, right up to the new R6 - R1). If you're looking for the complete lines you can actually swap out for the banjo bolt for an R6 (17 bucks right from yamaha with the 3 copper washers) and run 2 individual lines right to the calipers... gets rid of the bulky collector.

    You'll need 20 degree fittings at the calipers, and then at the banjo you need a straight for the inside fitting (shorter cable) and 20 degrees for the outside (longer cable) so they fit together.

    And to measure the full lines just go from the banjo to the caliper (through the forks) and add 2 inches...



    Now, will the stainless upper line fit? Probably. Check for length. All jap bikes tend to use the same plumbing fittings for brake lines. Your yamaha dealer will be able to tell you the size for the bolt at the collector... or the XJ CD may have the part no's for the fittings... I don't have one so I can't check for you.

    If he's got the stock front end, it's a single, so you should be able to replace the two-piece stock line & junction with a single 40" hose with a 20° or 30° banjo on each end. Can even re-use your stock banjo bolts -- that's what I did. Ordered the braided line & fittings out of the catalog at my local Yamaha dealer - about $50

    40" seems a bit long to me.

    The line for the far side of mine was, I believe, 37", and I could have lost another inch and still had plenty of slack (with the bike on jackstands).

    The dude who did my lines said to measure and add 2 inches. so measuring tape goes up from the caliper, through the forks and across to the banjo. Add 2 inches.

    I recomend 20 deg at the caliper to be snug, then whatever angle you want up top. I would use straight b/c it's cheaper... save yourself 5 bucks.

    EDIT: Remembered we're using lower bars, that is probably where the extra couple of inches is coming from. :oops:

    And definately re-use the banjo's. If you're worried then get new copper washers from yamaha, you'll need 4 (again, washers from an r6 banjo are the same part number).
