I am about to rebuild my front brake pads on my 1983 Maxim 650cc. There are so many to chose from on ebay and I would like to know which one would be the most affective. I have attached the links from ebay, let me know what you guys think.

When you have made your selection, reply with the number you think would be best.

Is your bike a 650 seca or maxim?

You have only one option for your bike....not 4. I would recommend ones that fit.

If I'm wrong it will only be a difference between organic pads and sintered pads....go organic if you ever ride on the street.

Thanks day7a1, I look on bike bandit last night. I was looking for the red light special at Ebay. I will look at the link you posted.

Does anyone know of a cheaper brake pad but quality pad?

    Thanks

Get a set of EBC's from chacal (XJ4Ever) and you won't have to worry if they are correct or not.

No one makes a pad less expensive than EBC....in fact I'm not sure anyone makes a pad to fit that bike other than ebc.

I tried to save myself a few bucks by buying a set of pads off of some no-name site and they did not fit right which caused them to not release properly and burn out my rotor. By trying to save about $20 I cost myself over a hundred, placed my life in jeopardy, and I STILL need to buy new pads.

Moral of the story: Buy from Chacal(aka Len, XJ4Ever)!

I used FA81 pads from EBC. It took about 300miles to bed the pads... Once they are bed in they work real well. Up until then they were dodgy at best so be careful running them in.

I ordered mine from Chapparel and from Parts Unlimited...

As they say, +1 on Chacal. You will get the right parts from him and he will ship them out very fast.

Bedding in the new pads is easy and takes just a few minutes and a few miles.

1.) Make sure any deposits from your previous pads are removed from the rotor. Garnet sandpaper works well for this. Scuff the entire surface to remove the invisible to the naked eye deposits.

2.) Find a road where you have some room and won't get rear ended in the next step.

3.) Accelerate to 60 mph, check your rear view mirror for safety and apply the brakes as hard as you can without locking up the wheel to a speed of about 10 mph. Do NOT come to a full stop at any time during this step.

4.) Repeat 5 more times for a total of 6 full brake applications.

5.) Ride for about 10 - 15 minutes to cool the pads down before using them to come to a full stop or you will deposit pad material on the rotor and your brakes will pulse.

Understand that somewhere around your 3rd to 5th time through the cycle your brakes will fade. This is normal and will clear up completely when they cool down.

One last thing, your brakes will smell quite hot which, again, is normal.

    Loren
