I have a 1981 maxim xj 650. I replaced my rear shoes hoping to fix the stiffness. But it didn't. Every time I go to push the rear brake I have to use a lot of force to move it. Is there something I need to lube OR loosen to where I don't need to push so hard?

Is the stiffness in the pedal action or in the braking/ stopping effect?
Will the rear brake grab and hold, stopping the bike?

    Reference a manual.
There is a pivot point on top and the actuator pivot on bottom.
The manual also describes how to set the position/ free play of the brake pedal.

Check your pedal pivot.... It needs to be greased occasionally too....
