Sorry brenton, just found your message last night. I tried responding with the Reply button, but there's no option to actually send the message, so it got as far as the Outbox and stayed there, so here's the answer to your PM:

The R1 retrofit is easy enough to do, you just need a good piece of thick aluminum to bolt it them to, then bolt them into the original mounts on the fork tubes.

Have a look at these pictures to see how it's done

    R1 Brake Caliper Mod

If you look through this site a bit (XJ Modifications), you will see a post by Winterhawk, who says he got most of the same benefit for about $100 US by replacing his stock Turbo master cylinder (13mm bore) with an XS1100 master cylinder (17mm bore) and adding braided lines. I bought a new double caliper replacement master cylinder from Parts N More for the XS11 for $76 US, and I will try going Winterhawk's route first with mine (turbo brakes really are dire!). There is a bike breaker just 5 minutes drive from me, and he has lots of calipers for sale if I want to go whole hog in a few months or so. He want's $200 CAN for a pair though, so I might not do it. I think I'll be getting a newer bike within a year or two if I get a decent job. I was within 20 min of getting a pair of R6 calipers for $50 US off Ebay last week but the price mysteriously went up in the last few minutes above my max bid. I guess the seller wasn't keen on selling the calipers for that much. Still seems kinda rotten though, as they were listed as "no reserve".

I'm gettin really antsy right now. You can see the end of winter from here, but it has gotten chilly again (-20C overnight) so it's really bittersweet right now. Roads are dry and clear (but salty) and you can feel some heat from the sun again (probably sounds funny to an Aussie!), but the snow is still packed in hard around my covered bike. Damn I want to get wrenching and riding again!

Don't rub it in. We just got 14" here overnight. Won't be riding for a while I guess.

Oh come on it's not that bad. Tomorrow night it's supposed to drop to -29C (-20F). So, I'll have to put on my snowmobile jacket and wear my snowmobile boots. My boots are good for -70C (-94F) so they keep my feet very warm. I guess I’ll have to plug in my car tonight 8O. Our cars have block heaters that we plug in to keep the oil warm. This way our cars can start in the morning.

Working in non insulated and non heated garage in the winter gets pretty nipply 8O. But when we come out of the deep freeze around -10C we wear sweaters. I don’t mind the cold at all but I do mind the length of our winters .

I believe the message stays in the Outbox until it's read by the recipient. That's when it's moved to the Sent box. Ofcourse if the receipient doesn’t check his PMs then he’ll never know it’s there. Best thing to do is set your “Notify on new Private Message by Email:” = YES. This way you’ll receive an email when someone PMs you
