The other day I noticed that a clutch spring was broken on my '81 XJ550, and I can't seem to figure out a)where to get a replacement and b)what it's called. It's not the spring on the clutch lever itself, it's on the lever (or whatever) that sticks out of the top of the transmission that the clutch cable attaches to. It's purpose seems to be to return that lever completely to it's normal position after you release the clutch lever. It doesn't seem to affect the operation of the clutch, and the bike seems to run as normal, but I'm sure it would be best to replace it. I didn't even notice it was there until I looked down one day and saw what looked like a strange piece of wire sticking out of the transmission. I'm afraid that if I don't replace it, eventually the clutch return will depend entirely on the clutch spring and the real clutch lever spring, and after time it might cause my clutch to slip and wear out.

Does anyone know what this spring is called, and more importantly where to get one?

    Thanks for your help. :)

I just replaced it on my Seca 550 last week.

It's called the torsion spring and you can get it from your local Yamaha dealer for $4.

    The part number is 90508-16459-00

The same thing happened to my bike last year. I ordered the spring from Yamaha. Part # is 90508-16459-00. It's called a torsion spring.

Mine broke too, and I rode it for an entire season before replacing it with no apparent problems. Still, best to replace it now.

Thanks for the help guys, I never would have found that on my own. I'll pick up that spring as soon as I get a chance. :)

    Thanks again!
