broken shift return spring

    so i took the casing apart to replace my shift return spring. i found that the spring was broken but i cant find the other half? is it possible it fell internally? im new to motorcycles any help can be very appreciated

    Lower 48 in general. Otherwise Central Mitten.
    It is more likely that the PO had the cover off noticing the broken spring. Then sold the bike to avoid having to fix it.

    If by chance the missing piece did fall into the motor. It would have fallen down into the oil pan, and not likely to cause problems. You can remove the oil pan to make sure.

    If the piece went into the sump, you might get lucky and have it come out with an oil change.

    is the oil pan usually this hard to get off? i removed the surrounding hex bolts but its not budging? any ideas.

    You may have missed a bolt.

    A recommendation to you: If one of the springs in the shift mechanism is broken, REPLACE ALL THREE. I ended up going through two gaskets and two separate repairs because I decided only to replace one spring, not to mention I nearly got stranded a second time.

    The springs are cheap enough, there is no real reason NOT to do all three and KNOW that you won't run into that problem in the future.
