I recently installed new handlebars on my 82 xj650 and the throttle and choke cable are too long. Anyone have any ideas how to shorten these? Or where to buy shorter cables? Thanks!

Cable length as well as the amount of "free" inner cable are important.

For the 550s for instance, a 750 Seca cable is perfect with shorter bars. (That won't work for your bike, they're virtually the same length.)

I figured that out by working with chacal; I gave him a "target" length and free cable measurement, it took a couple days but we figured it out. There is probably another Yamaha cable that will work.

On the 550 I was able to re-route my throttle cable so that it goes over the cross tube above the carbs instead of in front of it and it "ate up" the excess length.

There are a couple of places that will do custom cables too, I'll see if I can find a link or two.

I put drag bars on my 550, and was left with a lot of extra cable. I just rerouted them. In the end my clutch and choke worked better then they had. I gues i lessened some of the turns in them. It took a little time, had to pull off the gas tank, but it was well worth it and FREE.
