    "Rick's Method Works!"

Kept hearing funny noises from the top end of the engine, couldn't pinpoint the problem and then thought...maybe I'll give the cam chain a tweak and see if I can tighten it.

Remembered Rick's method - timing cover of...turn clockwise a couple of turns and then anti clockwise quickly. Heard a "clack" from inside and there you go - obviously the automatic cam tensioner just needs some manual assistance. But the motor sounds much better and tighter now and not like it's got a metal mouse running around inside it.

In 1985 Yamaha terms, "automatic" cam chain tensioner probably meant it automatically adjusts when you manually intervene...!

One thing I like about this site is the ablility to cut through the tech speak in the book and, get to the meat and potatos of the fix in a very clear way. I've learned so much from the other contributers of this site as well. There can't be enough said about the folks that freely share their time & knowledge here with others. Thank you, to all those that give, there are many that you'll never see that are in your debts.

Back in the early 80s when a noisey auto tensioner style bike came in, we would take the cap off and push on the plunger until we heard 1 click. Every one became real quiet. We came up with this because the bikes were just too noisey. Customer's loved it. We could only do it with a Snap on 3/8th air ratchet with out pulling the carbs.

Step by step...please...you need the motor in neutral right? then use a socket or a wrench on the crank? should it be easy to turn it?...pull the plugs too right?
