Hey this '83 looks a little wierd to me...I'm used to camchain adjusters with a lockbolt that goes in from the side and holds the pin in place (like the one in the post on chamchain adjuster where the guy is missing a lockbolt), or a bolt/locknut arrangement for manual adjustment...

This '83 has nothing but the adjuster "tower" with a bolt in the end of it, no nut...doesn't make sense to me, how does this work? I've looked at the parts fiche, it shows just the bolt like I'm seeing, but can't understand how it does anything.

    Anyone enlighten me?

Also, there is another locknut/bolt that appears to be some kind of adustment point on the top of the crankcase, between the alternator and the cylinder block, offset to the left side of the motor...what is this?

I can't seem to find any good info about the '83, which people keep telling me is oddball in some respects, but no specifics...

hopefully you folks can straighten me out on this thing...

    Thanks!

    You have an automatic tensioner.

    1) Remove the crankcase cover and rotate the engine through 2 normal revolutions

    2) Then quickly reverse direction and the tensioner should take up slack on the chain.

Basically you force the chain to slacken and the tensioner will tighten up.

    Done.

Wow! That was fast and easy! Thanks!

Any idea about the other thing I see?

Is that same bolt on both sides of the motor? I'm thinking maybe the YICS passage bolt, but not sure if the 83 had YICS. Can you snap a pic?

It does have YICS..it is directly ahead of the alternator "hump" in the casting, and is the only thing like it I see...and it's specialized, not a stud passing through from inside the case with a nut on it...it actually is a small bolt head with a larger nut around it...

Ok, so it's not YICS...I need a picture...I'm not quite understanding what it is. Perhaps someone else will chime in to help you.

Yeah, i know it's hard to picture...if you were looking at the back of the alternator housing from the right side, you see the back of the alt casting, the camchain adjuster coming out the back of the cylinder block, and if you looked straight down at the crakcase between these two points, it's sticking out the top of the case, over to the left side of the engine from centerline...

I'll try to get a pic posted later if nobody remembers seeing it before...

Left side cover. Be sure and use a wrench.

Just so we're clear...as a mechanic I see left and right on a vehicle as if seated on/in it...so in this case left would be opposite of the clutch cover side of the motor?

What's under the other (right) side? Timing components?

As you can tell this engine is completely freaking me out...it's different in many ways from anything I've worked on before...

I was talking about the covers on either end of the crank...is there anything to wrench on there? Doesn't look like it form the parts fiche...

So is this the cover over the starter drive I have to remove...?

    Confused...

The bolt with the jam nut on it is the rear camchain guide retainer pin. It holds the rear guide in place. DO NOT remove this pin or you will be sorry.

There is nothing under the right side engine cover, except a blanking plug for the crankshaft. The left cover has the timing plate and rotor under it.

So that's the guide for the primary chain? I won't screw with it, thanks for warning me...

So there is something to put a wrench on under the timing cover?

Most bikes I've worked on reccomend you don't rotate the motor with the centerbolt on the timing side...they like to snap off in the crank...

Is that how you rotate this one? Safe to do so?
