    :?:

I just wanted to know if the fuel sender once out of the gas tank can be repaired somehow?

Does anyone have a photo of a fuel sender? If so can you post it or send me a link to the photo?

Is it usually the float mechanism that goes bad or is it some other part of the sending unit that goes bad???

The ones I have seen, are just a coil of wire wraped around a flat insulator, with a contact connected to the float that slides up & down.

    Yes-under some comditions.
The wire on mine was separated frm the rest of the unit when
the fuel tower (filter) popped out of the petcock.
I took it to a shop and the best price I could get then was $63.00
for OEM. no aftermarket was found.
I asked the mech if it could be fixed. He said to try soldering
the wire back in place (that worked!), but if not buy a new condencer
    at radio shack.
So far It's been over a year since the repair without any probs.

    Here's a pic:

From a 550 Seca. Note the little wire and the fact that the insulation has crumbled away (arrow.) I believe this is the wire parts was referring to.

Sorry, but I never took one apart any further. This is the best I've got; I was about to send the unit to somebody (it was working) so I didn't pop the cover. Looks as though the little tabs could be straightened and the cover easily released though.

That wire could serve the same function as mine, but I only have
the low fuel warning light. Although it doesn't have a float valve
it amounts to the same idea. fuel level sends a sig via a condencer,
according to the mech I spoke with.
The manual does not state the type of device used-only it's place-
    ment.

Wow, if mine looks anything like that then I am just going to replace it. I ordered one from one of our sponsors today. Thank you all very very much for the information. That was not at all what I was expecting. Again thank you very much.

WD, don't give up hope. I can fix the issue of the wire insulation if that is your problem (and I'm fairly local). I've got some pretty big soldering irons (300+ watts of Big Bertha) that'll help get the ball rolling. If it is simply corrosion, I can open up the can and soda blast it. What exactly is the problem you are experiencing?
