It is rather simple Robista, there are two options available to my knowledge. You select either set from Dyna(?) or Accell, slip them into the space formerly occupied by the originals, wire in some adapters, and presto, your done. I really don't think it could get any simpler, save someone doing it for you. Oh yes, you will need to fabricate custom lines for your spark plugs with the Accell kit, but that is rather easy too. Good luck!

hey, thanks for the response Robert, one other question I have about installing high performance coils is; When I checked the various accel coils for sale, I noticed that( for my particular application) they are universal 4 cylinder coils, for cdi units. Does that mean they are gonna work on my bike, or do I have to run certain voltage tests before ordering? If so, how do I test for that?

You should be able to use the applications they list. It is rather expensive to create an new ignition system for every vehicle created so a fair number of systems remain virtually intact save a few engineering tweaks to fit the various different applications. The universals that I purchased for my '81 XJ650 Maxim cover just about every thing Yamaha made for several years. This is not uncommon. It also should be said that the companies that make these components wouldn't stay in business very long if they were unable to provide reliable product application information. If you are in doubt, contact the company directly, their product support should be able to answer any questions you might have. A quick question. Are you replacing poor performing coils or just looking for a power upgrade?

both, the bike still has the same coils it came with 20 years ago.I was running ok 2 weeks ago, but all of a sudden it isnt starting. it cranks over fine, but is not firing up. I checked the two outer plugs and theyre fouled. So I was thinking it would be a beneffit to the overall performance of the bike to change the plugs and coils.Might as well get some extra power while I'm at it with accel coils. Its just something that I have never done myself and was wondering what it involved to make the transplant.Did it greatly help your bike out Robert?

I'm guessing secaman is talking about this http://www.icatusa.com/old_site.htm

They seem to have old and new site so the site navigation may be a bit odd...

I fitted dynas and new plug leads to both my Xs - easy to do if you remove the radiator first, takes max of 2 hours per installation. Very effective upgrade, I got the coils and ne leads from Z1Enterprises.

I installed the Accells because my old coils were firing weakly. Starting was improved but I did not notice any improvement in its behavior otherwise. WOW, $179US a pop for those ICAT units! (and you would need 4= $700) No thanks. What they are selling sounds like the old Capacitive Discharge units from the 70's miniaturized to fit in the spark plug wire. Lot of dough for minimal return.

I put Accel's on my XJ650LJ Seca Turbo. Custom made the mounts. Be sure you get the Accel's for a TCI and not CDI. They make 2 different types.

Outstanding point Winterhawk! Glad you mentioned that. I "ass"umed that the reader was familiar with the difference. Sorry Robista, this is a very important difference. Be sure to verify the difference on your particular machine, although I would be willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that given it is an XJ700, it is going to have the newer TCI. Good catch Winterhawk!

thanks people for all your input. I thought that the 86 maxim x would use coils for cdi application, after all doesnt it you a cdi box part # tid14-35?

thanks winterhawk, I thought it was a cdi, but hey, you learn something new every day right? You know even on ebay they list them as cdi boxes.I wonder if those people know? Did you gain any noticable advantages with your accel coils? Is it worth the $$ to do the upgrade?

I think Accell's claim of having to richen up the bike because of a hotter spark is a bunch of bull. Not sure if it runs better or not but they look neat...LOL

I know it's not a direct comparison, but when we were circle track racing, we went from a junk stock distributor to a fully tuned racing HEI setup, and ended up having to go up about 4 jet sizes, so I'd say there probably is some truth to it, but jetting depends on so many things other than spark alone.
