My friend is about to tackle the valve shims on his 1982 XJ550 maxim. I have loads of spare shims left over from servicing my '76 Z900 & '77 Z1000 over the years. I just wondered if anybody knows if these Kawasaki shims are the same as the ones used on the XJs?

I doubt it, there's probably minute difference in the diameter of the shims. If you have a micrometer or whatever you could probably measueran XJ one and compare to the ones from the Kawis...

Just an update, I bought a genuine Yamaha shim size 250, part number J7-12169-A1, and it is identical to the left over shims from my 1976 Z900. Exactly same diameter & same right-angled corner. I used a couple of my Z900 shims in my friends 1981 XJ550 and they worked fine.
