It seems pretty rediculous but I've been to 2 different Canadian Tire stores and a Princess Auto here in Edmonton and I can't get a gasket scraper. Then I just typed it in on the CT website and nothing comes up? You gotta be kidding me. Do they go by some other name as well?

And if those 2 stores just don't carry them (hard to believe), where else would I have to go? I would think Sears would have to be the next logical step... I'm not even sure if there is one near me.

They can't be that uncommon. It would be like looking for a torx screwdriver and not being able to find one.

I'm in the midst of replacing the head gasket on my XJ. Right now I have all the valve cover screws out but need to tap and pry it off.

You don't want to use the scraper between the head and cylinder block. Try tapping up with a rubber hammer but easily so you don't break a cooling fin. To make gasket material come off easily use Permatex Gasket Remove. Really great stuff.

You can get those little razor-blade scraper things from the Dollar Store. Usually comes in a pack with a couple of knives and extra blades too.

    You got Dollaramas in Edmonton?

Failing that, look in the paint department in CTire. They usually have some good scrapers there that would work.

I've taken a regular putty knife and shortened the blade to a 1" length. Then I beveled one side, making a sharp scraping surface. But, use this with care. It will EASILY damage aluminim.
The old stand by razor blade is probably your best bet and fairly cheap too. Used in conjunction with the afore mentioned gasket remover and you'll get a head clean in about an hour.

Ah thanks for the advice. A couple taps from a rubber mallet and it came right off. Onwards, I'm tackling the issue of removing the timing chain. I sure hope I can keep the cams aligned after putting it together.

I have a dreadful vision of myself bringing a box of parts to a dealer and saying "put this mostly back together for me so I can finish it off." LOL. Damn what a pain.

Be sure you have ALL the Fasteners undone.

There are a pair on the front ... in the middle that almost everyone forgets to undo.
