On my 82 xj650 i can not get the bike to idle correctly. It has a stock air box but now has open headers. the bike starts and runs great and by looking at the plugs they are a nice tan color. I warm the bike up and turn the idle screw till it sits at about 900rpm and the bike runs good, but as soon as i toutch the throttle the bike takes a while to come back down rpms. as soon as i back the idle screw till it wont idle the problems goes away. i put all new intake boots on it and still have the problem. not sure where to go from here.

Did you pull the spark plugs to see how everything is burning in the cylinders?
Black sooty plugs= too much gas
    White chalky plugs= not enough

Take short trips for about a half mile so you can get the plugs to show color.
Then pull the plug to adjust the mix to a dark brown color slightly black.

    -VALVE CLEARANCES in spec.

-Float levels (set using fuel and clear tubing.)

    -Running vacuum sync, YICS blocked.

Then and only then do we worry about tweaking mixtures. Hanging idle is generally a sync issue, which can't be dealt with effectively until the valves are in spec; it could also be float-level related. Or all three combined.
