Sounds like the primary chain guide may be busting up and dropping bits into the shifting drum preventing the bike from shifting. If you do a search on this site for "shifting problems" or "primary chain guide" you will find other threads discussing this situation.

I would drain the oil and look for small bits of plastic/hard rubber in the oil.

I'll second Nick's diagnosis. Had the same thing happen to me. Had to split the case and replace a $20 chain guide. The phenolic part of the guide gets hard and cracks with time, then pukes little pieces of itself all over the transmission gears. Easy fix, pain in the patoot to pull the motor though. Order up new seals for the crank, alternator, selector shaft, and rear shaft while you have the case apart. No need to pull the top end apart. That will buy you some time before you have to do it again. Best of luck!

thanks again for the directions guys.......I opened the side cover & looked into the hole to find a corner of the chain guide about the size of a Quarter sitting in front of me, after much twistin & shoutin I got it out , not one other piece of plastic could be found in the oil I drained . I did however find a broken drill bit tip & 3 shards of casting which has me wondering but thats hopefully a winter issue

From the sounds of your oil change, the hair on the back of my neck stood up. A bit of a drill bit? If you wish for this bike to serve you a while, you had best pull the sump straight away (this requires pulling the motor). There is a strong possibility that the damage is already done. Gads, what kind of a knuckle head leaves pieces of drill bit floating around in his engine case??? Hummm.... let's see here, piece of High Speed Steel (hardened) VS my engine's delicate machine surfaces... No crystal ball needed here.

can not & WILL NOT argue with that logic......but until I find a new motor or win the lotto I intend to keep my trips a tad on the close to home kind.....that drill bit has been sitting in there for 3 seasons that I know of cuz that's when I got her
