I bought an xj650 that had been sitting for years and I've cleaned the carbs, changed oil and now I want to make sure it runs before I do any more work on it.

I have bypassed the clutch and side stand sensors, bike is neutral and bypassed the ignition key by connecting the brown with the red cables (based on the wiring diagrams)
But when I try to start it I get nothing.

Tested the starter motor and works, starter relay works...

I'm sure I'm missing something simple.

How do you suggest I wire things up to get it going and then isolate any issues?

    Thank you!

by try to start it you mean bike does not turn over?

run/kill switch set to proper position?

starter button may be dirty or bad ground. clean motor ground and starter button make sure ground wire is not broken

by starter relay you mean the solenoid? or starter cutoff relay?

to bypass sidestand switch just remove the relay for it. clutch switch did you remove it or cut and twist the wires together. if you just unplugged it bike only starts in neutral.
    neutral light working?

do you have a Maxim or Euro 650 ? what year?

I mean that when I press the start button nothing happens. But if I wire the starter motor, it works and the engine turns but there's no spark.

The kill switch is working and in the right position. (tested)
The selenoid/starter relay is working. (tested)
I jumped the clutch and side stand by joining their wires together.

I get no lights on the dash as I jumped the key switch. I'm not sure how to jump all of it to get the lights on the dash. I jumped the red and brown wire but there are also blue and white ones that connect to the dash that I don't know how to jump.

    It's a 650 turbo Seca 1982

I think you have an emergency engine stop relay to deal with and a emergency switch. looks like it cuts off all power to starter safety relay if it is not closed or bypassed

    XJ650 Turbo models:

Flasher: onto a welded bracket on the right side of the main headlight support fairing.
Flasher canceller: below TCI unit on right side of bike, behind sidestand relay, below the airbox.
Starter motor solenoid/relay: on left hand side, attached to and behind the battery box.
Starter/Ignition cut-off relay (no color): located on right side of headlight/fairing main support bracket.
Sidestand (kickstand) relay (blue): mounted onto a tab bracket welded to the right frame down tube, below the airbox.
    Headlight relay (yellow): not used.
Fuel pump relay (red): located on the left side of headlight/fairing main support bracket.
Emergency stop switch: located on the left side of headlight/fairing main support bracket.
Emergency stop switch relay (blue): under gas tank.
Boost pressure sensor: centrally located below the airbox and the battery box.
Diode block: inside the headlight housing.
Neutral switch: in a hole in the bottom of the crankcase, just "outside" of the oil pan, on the bottom of the engine, up inside a recessed "well".

    Thanks dude.

So i need to make sure all of those work? How do I create a circuit to just turn the engine on? I just want to make sure the engine runs before I mess with all the electric parts.
This bike has 100 million things for such an old model LOL

this ling tells how to bypass most relays and switches. and locations
The Ultimate Relay, Switch, Sensor, and Diodes Guide

if you find the cut off switch and make sure it works it needs to ground the cut off relay to close that all other relays should close.
sidestand switch is bypassed by removing sidestand relay or connecting the wires on it and grounding them.

find the engine cut off relay and jump across the two connections should be red white wires shown on the top 2 connections to relay . my manual is a little out of focus.

the ignition switch should have a key code on the bottom of it to get a key cut. ebay has 2 vendors who cut keys from code 1 sells 1 key for 10$ the other cuts 2 keys fot 20$ that would be a good place to start.

with your wire jumped as you have it it should be sending power to the rest of fuses if you have voltage at tci should be redwire with a white or yellow stripe bike should turn over .

I do not know how the cluster works in this bike it also may need power.

you may be able to get more help here at the turbo forum

The Turbo forum is here: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/tmioa22687/yamaha-seca-650-turbo-f10/

we only have a few turbo owners here

Jumping the red to brown on the main harness at the ignition switch mating plug should be all you need to do to start the bike if all else was functioning - everything including the CMS, headlight, and neutral light should be functioning. The blue wire at the ignition switch is fused by a 5 amp fuse in the headlight bucket but is only needed to power the license plate lights and the tail light.

You can do the same jumper at the fuse box, but you want to be careful here and know which is the input and output of the fuses in case there is a short downstream.

It is a bit unclear if you have the neutral light, headlight, etc, but if none of those are working and you are jumping the main harness plug that mates with the ignition switch then either the main fuse is blown or there is an issue with power to the main fuse or along the way to the ignition switch, or the output side (Br wire) and power is not making it back to the fuse box. You can easily test that with the jumper installed as all fuses in the fuse block should have power. Note also that a lot of these older bikes have defective fuse blocks that cause loss of power to various circuits.

It might be worth a try but with my 650, after I knew all electrics worked, the none start up came down to a rubbish connection at the ignition fuse. I sanded the holder a little to clean it up, popped the fuse back in and it fired off of the button

    Thanks guys!

I found that jumping the side stand and clutch did the trick and I had to jump red to brown and red to one of the blues in the ignition for it to work.

The fuses were rusty so I cleaned them up and checked for continuity as well.

I'll be doing a good test today with a charged battery and will let you know how it goes

Thank you for all the help! I got it to crank and check things. Turns out the compression is only 75psi so I'm going to have to check things.

Does anyone know where to get pistons, piston rings and stuff for these bikes? I'm struggling to find anything. Specially for turbos.

    I'll check the turbo forum.
