    Greetings

In the process of tearing down a set of carbs for the XJ750. My carb bowls are the kind that have both drain screw paths in the casting. Threaded on one side and plugged on the other. 2 rights and 2 lefts......

The nipple in the center of all 4 bowls look like they were never drilled out.

Logic, scary as it is, tells me to drill them out very carefully. Going ever so shallow each time until it breaks through and then clean them again.

However - I feel I must ask that question first - Just to make sure.

Also - any recommended drill size??

    Thank You

    Stephen

That's odd- you might want to shoot us a photo, never heard of that.
I suppose a small, 1/8 inch hole would work, without actually measuring it.

I'm guessing those were Monday Morning carbs, with a full Sake hangover.
What else did they forget ??

Really, those will clean right up; I've had worse.

Make sure you run a wire thru and clear some 80 odd passages - -
    * the tiny holes near the butterflies
    * the brass tubes, and it's side vent
    * the jets hidden in the float bowl body
    * the removable jets and every hole in the main emulsion tubes

Wow - maybe it is sooo rare that I should not touch them - just doubled the value of the bike.

LOL - I do have a Honda CT70 in the wings waiting for restoration that is a factory flaw. Different decals on each side.

Already have everything removed, soaking quite a few of the parts. Started to soda blast the bowls. Rack is currently in a 5 gallon bucket of HOT soapy water soaking for a bit. Wife not happy with the idea of putting them in the dishwasher. Might have to wait until she goes shopping.

Going to try and do a 'Leak Down' test tomorrow on the block.

I will try and keep up with progress reports.

    Thanks everyone

    Stephen

    THROTTLE SHAFT SEALS.

Trapped in both sides of each carb; can't get them out without breaking the rack and undoing the butterflies, etc.

The reason we DON'T SUBMERGE the whole rack. You will trap whatever you soak it in inside the throttle shaft seals. For better or for worse, usually worse.

Please get it out right away, and lets' hope that the soapy water wasn't too soapy and that it dries up right away...

    Thank you.....

I knew not to soak the rack in Carb Cleaner, Lemon Juice, Heavy Degreaser, or to Hot Dip them. It was also my understanding that soapy water was fine.

Point taken - Thank you again.

I still have a few months to go in the project. Currently 25 degrees out, and since Saturday we have received about 18" of snow.

Hey no sweat. I know lots of folks had heard not to dip them, but not necessarily the correct reasons (all 8 of 'em) for not doing so. (OK, 6, the outside 2 are easy.) I just didn't want you to introduce a new problem for yourself.

I'm about straight west of you about 380 miles as the Google-crow flies; we've got the cold but you got all the snow. Darn.

I have the ability to get my tiny garage toasty warm, every tool known to man, and a basket case 650 to work on. Winter?

Actually, I'd like some snow on the roof. Cheap added insulation.
