Carb Cleaning

    Hey all,

    I have been reading through these posts for about 2 days now and It's becoming an addiction. But it's also given me more confidence to fix my own bike instead of paying someone else to do it. Right now my spark plugs on the two left cylinders are black, the right side is black but not as bad. I don't have any problems idleing, I do have issues sometimes trying to start as it doesn't seem to have any fuel in the carbs to start.

    This weekend I am hoping to to accomplich a few things.

    1. Breakdown the carbs and clean them
    2. re-attach and properly sync them (using the YICS block off tool obviously)
    3. try and get the engine to run alittle less rich.

    Right now All i have for tools are going to be home made IE. Port blanking tool and greg's two bottle sync tool .

    any advice would be great -

    I'll try and take pics along the way if i run into any issues.

    You will need some quarter inch clear plastic tubing to check the float height. You probably want to grab a small metal precision ruler that has metric measurements for float heights.

    Make sure to give everything a good visual inspection and replace any o-rings. If you are not breaking the rack, at least take the outside clips off of the throttle shafts to inspect your throttle shaft seals. If they look bad, then it's time to break the rack and replace those.

    If the throttle shaft seals look iffy and you move forward, you will find that it will be hard to sync and there will be idle problems. Even if they look OK, you may still see the problem as I did in my case.

    Also make sure you do the clunk test.

    Just a couple of thoughts from top of mind. In my case, I didn't replace the float needles and had overflow leaks. So, I got to pull the carbs again to replace them.

    Oh, and one last thing. If you are very methodical and thorough (and a little lucky), you will get it the first shot. If not, just be mentally prepared to pull them a few times before it is right. I think it took me four times before I nailed it.
