So, I decide to clean my carbs since I have no clue what they look like, and the bike is having issues. Cylinder 4 won't fire most of the time and just generally runs like crap.

So, I print out Rick's Carb Cleaning Guide, and start cleaning. All goes well until I go to remove the mixture screws, the plugs are gone. Ok, so I clean out the holes to get a look at the screw tops. The holes were FULL of garbage, just full. I get it all clean and take a look inside.... no, no, no, no. One looks untouched, one looks slightly man handled, the other two are OBLITERATED. I removed the two that looked half decent, had to be a little tough with one but they came out ok. Third one, took a drill and an easy out, but it came out, but I then see why it was stuck so bad. The threads on the carb body are beyond repair, I am completely surprised the thing came out at all. The fourth one is worse, takes drills, broke my easy out in the screw head, ended up drilling and cutting the thing out. Finally got the screws out, but the threads are so far gone, even before I started working on anything, I don't know what I can do with them.

I am hoping someone will have an idea, I thought maybe a thread-saver would do the trick, but I can't find one with a matching thread pattern. Could the threads just be tapped out to the same size? Am I stuck trying to get two new carb bodies?

Who ever had the bike before tried to get the screws out, or did get them out and destroyed the things installing them. Two of the screws (the ones with the bad threads) were missing the rubber o ring even!

Is there any way to save my carbs, or do I need to start looking for new ones?

(Otherwise these carbs were pretty clean once I got the opened up)

I think your going to need to look for new carbs. I don't know that you could repair those threads. Someone else should be along shortly maybe with better news.

If you need new one's I've got a set off my 81 650 maxim. They were cleaned before they were put on the shelf a couple years ago. If you want them make me a reasonable offer.
