So I rebuilt my carbs. boiled them in lemon juice. removed the jets, replaced the mains and pilots. I cant help but notice that it looks like I am missing an air jet, I see the threads in the hole, but there is no jet....

all 4 of your carbs will look like that pic. that empty hole is for a plate that goes inside. and a screw to go into that hole that holds the plate in. if all 4 of your carbs are like that. then they're all missing that plate and screw.

others that are more knowledgeable will have to tell you if that plate is important or not.

*EDIT* Just noticed ur q wasn't answered yet. The air/fuel mix screw is right next to the "choke" plunger, it might be covered by an anti-tamper cap.

    Bumpty bump.
    Is it or isn't?

I read elsewhere on this site that the Hitachi carbs do not require them at all.

i'm told the plates are not necessary - although, i can't help but wonder why they would put them in there if you don't need 'em.

You're OK if you have 2 Air Jets and a Threaded Hole.
The Threaded Hole is for a Fastener that held a Blanking Plate.

The Bike goes faster without the Plates.

Polish the Bores and it runs better, ... yet!

the fuel mix screw is on top on the outside located in front of the carb. if you look THROUGH the front side of the carb you will see a hole on the inside top. that is where the fuel mix screw goes through.

as rickomatic stated. the bike goes faster without the plate and screw.

if that's the case. make sure all 4 carbs are missing. so they all run the same. if it's just one missing. then replace it. and for kicks and giggles. you can try all 4 pulled out and see if there's a difference.

    Remove the Plates.
See how she runs without the Plates and AFTER you CONFIRM that ALL the Air Jets are in the correct configuration.
Pilot AIR Jet --> Large Opening --> (O) --> Top
Main AIR Jet --> Small Opening --> (o) --> Middle
    Empty Threaded Hole
