Hi everyone, After a long winter and deciding not to sell my Xj! I figured its time to get it back on the road and actaully clean the carbs. Cleaned the carbs did the whole 9 yards it looks purrrrty! Clean as a whistle. Problem is I dont remember the settings on the mixture screws, The Throttle screws and the main Idle adjuster. I read through quite a number of treads found a good starting point for the mixture screws at 2.5ish out. Whats a good way to adjust the throttle and idle adjuster? Do I do the bench synch? to figure out the throttle screw settings? Any help would be great. Its a 83 Xj550 maxim with Minuki carbs.

yes do the bench sync. Rick's method with the 3x5 cards cut into 1/4" strips is good. they must be 1/4", you'll know why when you're doing it. set the idle screw so it holds the card enough to where when you pull the paper out, you feel the same drag on all of them. Then leave the idle screw there till you start the bike, then you'll probably have to back it down a bit. I can't comment on Mikuni's but yes I read 2.5 is about right for a starting reference point.

is there one way or another that is better? i was reading about using 2 paper clips. Would the index card or paper clips make for any else adjusting?

Did you adjust your valve clearances?

No not yet, I need to order a new valve cover gasket, So I figured I'd wait to do that till I have the gasket. Im not going to do a full synch on them yet I just need to get it in the ball park, Im just looking to get the bike running, Like it was before I took the carbs off
