Just got done installing my butterfly shaft seals from Chacal in the carbs. 2 of the eight old seals were basically non-existent and the other 6 were an unrecognizable pile of goo. No wonder it would not idle right. What a huge difference in idle smoothness the new ones made. This should be done on every carb rebuild, takes a little extra work but it is certainly worth the improvement in idle quality and smoothness - I am impressed and recommend this step be added to Rick's carb overhaul instructions.

My article was not intended to be a complete overhaul. Just a thorough cleaning.

I wouldn't want an inexperienced Do-It-Yourself'er to tackle splitting the rack, removing the Butterfly's and doing the Seals.

That is an ambitious project that requires an additional level of skill and familiarity with the operation and design of the Carbs.

I'd recommend buying a set of practice Carbs and doing them a little bit at a time to get the lay of the land before exploding the Carbs you need for your bike if only a cleaning will set them right.
