I recently bought an 82 Maxim 750 from a friend that had been sitting for a couple years it was a daily driver before he bought a croch rocket (dumb a$$$$$) any way bike ran kinda rough and after riding for awhile & it got good & warmed up when u pull up to a stop the bike dosent want to idle down and RPM wants to spike so i pulled carbs off pulled bowls not real dirty or gummed up but pulled jets floats needle & seat sprayed every thing out w/carb clean and put back together drained old gas from tank and put in fresh now bike runs ok but still wont idle down when good & warm only way to make the RPMs drop is to choke the bike

Problem #2 If the bike sits overnite u have use ether to start it will start and stay running i dont think it is a spark prob or starter issue (read another post about same prob) if u dont use ether it fires but if give it throttle it dies hit the starter button again & it will fire untill throttle then dies I only have to do this if it sits overnite i can ride bike to work and it starts just fine after work any help would be great Thanks Chris

I'll state what most of the experts will mostly say (I'm still a newbie) - Especially Since it has been sitting for awhile

    Reclean/Rebuild and Sync the Carbs
    Check Plug colors
    Adjust Valve Clearance
    Check Compression
    Check for Brake Delamination
Get the manual and service manuals
    ETC.

You could also for a temp fix try adjusting the idle screw and/or pilot screws depending on how the plugs look. 1-4 Starts from the outer left towards the right. That's what I've done for now while I read the manuals and start buying tools.

sounds like the pilot jets are plugged, they deliver fuel during idle, you will need to pull them and make sure you can squirt carb cleaner through them. small gauge guitar strings work well for poking through if they are completely blocked. might need to soak them in carb cleaner overnight to soften the blockage first.

Definitely I would have to say the pilot circuit in the bowls are clogged. Theres a really tiny non removable pilot jet in the float bowl. If the guitar string doesn't work to unplug Chacal XJ4Ever.com has a drill bit the right size. I used drill bits from a welder tip cleaning set the hole is pretty darn small I think dust could clog it.

To get a Bike that sat for more than a few months back to having its High Performance potential ... the Carburetors MUST be Cleaned.

Needing to use the "Choke" is a SURE Sign those Carbs need a Cleaning.

You do NOT need to Split the Rack in order to give the Carbs a routine Cleaning.
But, the Bowls, Jets, Passages, Ports and Parts ALL need to be absolutely free of any debris or foreign matter.

You get No Joy until the Carbs come off and get Cleaned.
After they get cleaned ... you Fine Tune.
    After its Fine Tuned ...
You just stop every now and then for gas.

Do any of you recommend a company and or brand rebuild kit to buy? I'm probably gonna do it myself, but take it to a shop to sync them.

you can synch the carbs youself its not hard. bench synch & then synch on bike. check the posts on forums on how to do it. you can build your own manometer to synch for under $5.00.
