Does anyone use any type of solvent to remove the carbon deposits from the valves and exhaust ports. I have been scouring the stuff off with scotch brite pads.

let them soak in a jug of something on the likes of this stuff. its not carb and choke cleaner, its thicker and has different chemicals in it that eat away just about anything. you can get this stuff at walmart, or local auto parts stores, might not be the GUNK brand, but same stuff either way. comes in a paint gallon jug.

Careful with those pads. You might need to polish the valve seats after that. Does anyone know if there's a good thread on polishing valve seats and seals in this forum? I've done a few before and it definately helped compression when those numbers start to get a little funky...

Thanks, I will look for that stuff. I don't want to do any damage scrubbing.

I've always used light oil (WD40 style stuff) to soak the carbon, and a suede brush (fine, brass haired wire brush) to work it in & loosen the really tough bits before blasting it away with brake cleaner & a toothbrush ;)

yea with that carb stuff you usually have to pull it out once every 24 hours or so if its real thick and pick some off, brass works great or if oyu really are worried about doing damage use a nylon brissled brush.

If you have a Facility nearby that does "Media Blasting", ... you can have everything :: Walnut Shell :: Blasted.

The process will remove all traces or Carbon Deposits without doing any harm to the Head.

Some places even use high-pressure Steam.

+ 1 on the soda, have used it on several heads and barrels. Will not damage the metal,or clog the oil passages. Just need to wash the residue off with hot water.
    Cheers , Murray
