Ok I have read everything I can find and this is my problem. I have a 82 xj650 I cleaned the carbs, and I now have a very high idle, 4-5000 rpm
I brought it to the shop and they tried to sysnc them for me and told me that the problem wsa the pilot jet was dirty. Ok I understand that. they told me that it is a recesed screw on the bowl side of the carborators. Ok I have that one two. The picture in the book shows it to be located under the small jet on the bowl side of the carb. SO was I wrong to assume that that the pilot jet I need to clean is located under this jet.( For clarity It is the small jet on the bowl side and yes it is cleaned). On some of the posts i have read it mentioned that this pilot jet in question is located under a brass plug. Now I have something that is brass under the small jet but it does have a hole in the middle( not a plug in my book) but ok. But the plug I keep reading about that I must remove is under the cold start needle. I am soo confused. I just want to ride this bike! Does anyone have any better explination as to where this jet is actually at or much better a picture of where it is? And I did pull off the cold start plunger and there is a hole there. Help.

The pilot jet is the brass jet just under the main jet that is accessible after removing the float bowl. The pilot mixture screw is located beside the choke plunger and is covered by a brass plug from the factory. On many bikes the brass plug has been removed by a previous owner.
The shop can have no idea that the pilot jet is clogged without removing the float bowls. A plugged pilot jet will usually make the cylinder miss from lack of fuel. I have found one via a colortune plug and a gas analizer should show it too. A sync tool will not find it.
A leaking air boot or intake boot is a likely candidate. Also under and at the back of the carbs is an idle adjustment knob that could be turned counterclockwise to lower the idle. This may bring the idle down to an acceptable syncing RPM.
Go to our links section on this site, select the "diy's and how to's" link and then select the "cleaning the hitachi carbs" link. This will take you to Dwayne Verhey's site which has photos of the parts and their location. It also is a detailed carb cleaning guide you will find very helpful.

A big thank you for everyone who had input on my problems. Well as it turned out I have fixed the problem and it is purrring like a kitten. What was causing me sumuch trouble when everyone else seems to get the whole clean & sync the carb thing you ask? Well let me tell you it was the #2 & #3 butterflies! Yes! that is correct, some time in the past someone had possible removed them or bent them ( No I never took them off!) any way I replaced them with doner set from anouther set of carbs I bought and guess what? It went to a good idel sysncd the carbs and tadaa! running great. Thank you again for every thing.
