After biting the bullet and removing my carbs and inlet rubbers, I fount that - after taking off all the tape and rtv that the rubbers were in pretty good condition so I just cleaned them up and put an "Inner tube ring" around the area where the clamps cut into the rubber.

The biggest problem that I can see - and the reason there was RTV everywhere - was the po had tried to reuse damaged gaskets on the rubbers, probably giving him an air leak (or two).

Now the carbs thenselves: Big Fitz suggested a thorough going over as the po seemed to be an idiot! Well, all 4 pilot mixture screws were 1 turn out - the book says two for mine. One of them I couldnt get out as the slot had been sheared off. Fortunately, a very sharp scriber and me putting 15 stones of pressure on it got it free.

Two of the four pilot jets were completely blocked and all four main jets were at less than 50% of what they were after cleaning.

The diaphragms were ok and the clunk test was passed. I swapped bowls 1 and 4 as the drains were facing the wrong way.

I used industrial alcohol for my jet cleaning (A free supply at work) and as much compressed air as I can use.

Now all I have to do is reassemble it all.........
