i just picked up a 81 cb750 custom the other day and the starter on it jumps out after a second or so when i am trying to start it. i had a virago that did the same thing but it never really hurt anything. what is causing this? is it the starter clutch? what do i need to do to fix this?

How many miles on the bike?
High mileage CB750s are known to wear the starter clutch gear out of round. This causes little spots where the springs, and rollers loose contact with the gear allowing the starter to spin out.

The only real way to fix the problem is to replace the starter clutch gear, but unfortunately they are NLA. The next option would be to find a good low mileage part on ebay.

The good news about all of this is that the starter clutch on the cb750 is external, and attached to the alternator rotor. So it will be a reasonably easy job once you find the parts.
