I learned some new profanities when I talked to platers about rechroming exhaust systems. Anything being plated has to be MOLECULARLY clean so it doesn't pollute the plating tank. Exhaust systems are nearly impossible to get clean (especially dual-wall pipes like the stock Yamaha pipes) and as such either they won't touch exhausts or charge 3X their normal price.

Powder coating won't hold up to exhaust system heat.

Jet-Hot coat is the only way to go. (Or cheesy rattle-can heat paint.) You're probably going to have to send it out unless you can find someone even remotely near you who offers the process. The powder-coating guy I use does it but he's out on the west side of Detroit by Metro airport.

BigFitz, How much does it cost to have an exhaust system Jet-Hot plated? Just roughly, are we looking at $100, $500, $1000?

I m sure the cost changes depending on the color etc. but a dark grey Jet-Hot exhaust system, with a dark gray powder coated frame and a nice dark blue tank and plastics would be a killer combination.

I'm starting to get dizzy just thinking about it!

My guy gave me a "ballpark" of $175-$200. Sounds quite reasonable to me, I had some stuff black chromed. We won't talk about that.

The Sterling Silver application sounds pretty cool. It'd be neat to do up a whole engine and exhaust with it.

Not sure that you would want to do the engine with this stuff. According to the web site that BigFitz pointed us to the coating significantly reduces the surface temperature of what it is applied to. I believe the sterling silver coating reduced the 1500 deg surface temperature of an exhaust system by 300 deg. Not good when you are trying to maximize heat transfer on an air cooled engine. This stuff sure is intriquing though. If someone were looking to make a really special restoration this product looks like it would certainly be a great addition to the overall decorating scheme.

I'm thinking (chrome looking) sterling silver on the frame, 4-2 slash cut exhaust, gas tank, and engine and trans covers. Then, put a digital gauge that I saw on another post on it. Then red LED's everywhere within tasteful and legal limits.

Well fine then!!!!! Be sure you get pictures so that we can all be jealous!

I have so many demands on my motorcycle funds I don't know if I will get to powder coat my frame this year but I still plan to go with charcoal gray. Just something to make the frame look different and make the dark blue paint really stand out.

I am hoping to find a nice BMW K series bike for long distance touring. Possibly one of the Iron Butt rides.

My son in law took one of my XS 650's and had the frame powder coated and the shop missed the promised delivery date by a whole lot. The dude powder coated the frame and the swing arm for $100 to make up for the delay. The only problem is that he was supposed to coat it black and for some reason he coated it a royal blue. It would look great with a bright yellow tank and plastics but so far I haven't been able to convince the young lad. He wants to put red with it. (Gag!)
