    Hi all,
I am planning on changing my oil and filter this weekend. Thing is...I bought an oil filter online but it didn't come with the black rubber O ring .. Do you think I'll get away with using to old one if I am gentle.?
And is 15w 40 mineral oil ok to use...Done want me starter slipping again..
    Thanks all.
    Morg.

Have you changed the oil before? If so and you changed the o-ring last time, then it should be okay. So long as it still feels like rubber it will do its job, just give it a wipe clean and smear some fresh oil on.

I re-used the large O- ring on my filter 3 times on my previous xj900, and it still was not leaking when I sold it and Ive re used a 25 year old O ring on a recently resucitated xj650 with no leaks. I,d say from my experience, that you would probably be OK to re-use it,

    cheers ,Murray

I have smeared silicone grease onto the rubber o ring in the past, it worked for me and also holds the o ring in place whilst fitting.

Aye Aye to that Cap'n  silicone grease is ideal for protecting/preserving rubber parts on these old bikes.

p.s. good to see more "Limeys" around on the forums the last few days!
