I was changing my plugs and on number three there was some thread sticking up and i cannot get the plug to screw back in properly. Now there was no issue with the old plug it went in smooth and came out smooth. It was fouled with fuel and i have fixed that problem i was getting exces fuel in my number three bowl. But now a bit of thread seems to be sticking out. Whaqts that gonna cost me or is there something i can do to get a plug in without messing it up worse?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Sounds like the plug hole was heli coiled before and its coming back out. You should replace the heli coil and be carefull when you take the plugs out of that hole.

you may try a hole reemer to straighten the threads but then again running It down In there May make It worse If its been repaired before.

You get a helicoil kit the same size and redo it, after carefully backing the dislodged one out.

If you turn the motor so that cylinder is on its compression stroke (valves closed) and pull the exhaust pipe you can use a shop vac to catch any shavings or debris you might drop into the cylinder.

Do you mean the threads of the head, or with a plug INSTALLED there are still threads sticking out as in the plug is not all the way in?

If the last part is your case, you probably don't have a helicoil- it's probably just stripped bad enough that it won't go in far enough.

Sears has a thread chase for $6~$7. Or they also sell a heli-coil type kit specifically for the 14mm plugs.

Hi guys just saw you mentioned Helicoils,I,ve had to have a broken plug drilled out of no.2 on my '80 XJ650 ,and the head specialist that did the job put some other type of thread insert in,apparently in cylinder head situations the heat transfer characteristics of the steel" Helicoils" have the effect of changing the heat range of the plug by one step(hoter,I believe). It was some sort of brass coloured insert ,carn,t recall what it was called.

    Cheers, Murray
