Charging unit install

Hey guys,

Maybe a silly question, but how tight should you tighten the brush holders on the cover of the charging unit? My previous one seemed to have cracked while in the unit (which is amazingly where my short was coming from) Also, how tight should the cover be put onto the stator. It feels like when I am tightening the cover, I'm squeezing the coils of the stator. Am I missing something or is this normal? I've got a 1981 Maxim XJ550.

I'd say just screw in the screws by hand or the lowest setting you have on a cordless drill. Use a dab of low strenth Loctite (purple if I recall correctly) and you should be just fine. Remember, you want your torque to be less than 7 ft/lb or you may crack something (in addition to the afore mentioned damage).

 

Make sure that your stator is fully "seated" within the generator cavity. Your generator cover should be involved int he task of 'pushing" the stator into place!
